AWKA — Late on Thursday, 20 August 2026, a loaded diesel tanker registered to Shafa Filling Station failed its brakes on the Agu-Awka axis of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway and struck a truck carrying animal feed. The wreck caught fire.
The Anambra State Fire Service said the call came at about 11:26 p.m., in front of Jezco Fuel Station, Agu-Awka. Two people died. Two others were injured and taken to hospital. Chief Fire Officer Engr. Chiketa Chukwudi Emmanuel led the crew that cut the blaze. Motorists were told to avoid the stretch.
This is not the first fire on that alignment. In March 2026 a gas tanker burned near the Women Development Centre at Agu-Awka and jammed the same road. The East’s busiest land corridor — Onitsha to Enugu, Awka in the middle — carries tankers, feed, passengers, and the Christmas crowd. Brake failure on a loaded diesel truck is not a mystery. It is a maintenance story that becomes a funeral when the night is wet or the slope is wrong.
Fire officers urged heavy-vehicle owners to check brakes before they join that road. That sentence will sound small beside two bodies. It is still the right sentence.
The Enugu–Onitsha Expressway is how Anambra feeds itself and how Enugu reaches the Niger. When a tanker burns on it, the delay is not only traffic. It is a reminder that the East’s prosperity still rides on axles that are older than the speeches about them.
