ABAKALIKI — Saturday, 22 August 2026, is local government election day in Ebonyi. The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission put council polls across the state’s 13 local government areas. Governor Francis Nwifuru voted at Edupfu Okemini Polling Unit 002. The state restricted human and vehicular movement from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Peoples Democratic Party did not take part. Its publicity secretary, Darlington Peter-Onwe, asked that the exercise be suspended “pending full and demonstrable compliance” with an order of Justice Oshomah, pending an amendment of Ebonyi State Local Government Law No. 005, and pending what he called verifiable participation of all registered parties, including the PDP.
The party’s statement, published on election morning, went further. It said what EBSIEC and the state government were presenting “is not, in law or in fact, an election at all.” It called the process a contempt of court and asked INEC, as the federal umpire, to take note.
Those are opposition claims, not findings of this paper. The courts will keep that file.
Channels Television reported widespread voter apathy by noon: some units with few voters, some with none, ad hoc staff waiting. The governor, through his information commissioner Barr. Ikeuwa Omebeh, commended EBSIEC for a seamless exercise.
A council poll held under a movement restriction, with one major party outside the hall, is not a carnival. It is a test of whether Ebonyi’s local government will be seen as won — or merely declared.
The result sheets will be read. The court files will not close because a Saturday was used.
