ABA — For a generation, “Made in Aba” was a compliment paid in the dark. Tailors, welders, and the Ariaria stalls ran on generators. On 9 June 2026, speaking at Invest Lagos 3.0, Governor Alex Otti said that era had a hole in it: Aba, treated as an electricity island with eight more local governments, now has 24-hour power.
The difference is Geometric Power, the Aba plant associated with Professor Barth Nnaji. Otti told Premium Times the plant’s ceiling is about 188 megawatts, enough, he said, to keep the Aba ring lit and, later, to wheel surplus toward Umuahia. Abia has also stood up its own electricity regulator and signed with Enugu Disco to pull the rest of the state off the old EEDC arrangement.
This is not folklore. On 11 August 2026, after several days of outage, Otti received Geometric’s management and publicly thanked them for restoring supply — the kind of sentence a governor only bothers to say when the light has become something people can miss.
Aba will not clap for a press statement. It will clap when a cutting machine runs a night shift without diesel. It will clap when a shoe last does not wait for fuel. If the island holds, Igbo manufacturing finally has the one input the apprenticeship system could never invent: a socket that stays alive.
The test is Umuahia, and then the rest of Abia. One city with light is a pilot. A state with light is a policy.

I have cousins in Ariaria. If the socket holds through a night shift, this is bigger than any campaign poster.

The Igbo apprenticeship did not begin in a seminar. It is how Ariaria still turns a boy with no capital into a man with a line of shoes.

The stalls in these photographs are not a museum of trade. They are one of West Africa’s densest credit systems — still informal, still fast, still Igbo.

Opened to traffic in December 2022 and inaugurated in 2023, the 1.6-kilometre crossing between Asaba and Onitsha is now part of how the East moves goods.
