ONITSHA — For half a century the East entered and left itself on a single 1965 span. Christmas traffic turned that bridge into a national joke. The Second Niger Bridge, 1.6 kilometres of concrete built by Julius Berger between Asaba and Onitsha, opened to local traffic on 15 December 2022 and was inaugurated in May 2023. The price tag often cited is about ₦336 billion.
The river crossing itself is no longer the argument. The argument moved to the link roads — the cloverleaf at Onitsha–Owerri, the Asaba approaches, the last kilometres that decide whether a truck actually saves a day. NSIA recorded Phase 1 as complete by late 2024. Into 2026, motorists and local reporters were still asking why some connecting works lagged the ribbon-cutting.
That is the Igbo way of judging infrastructure: not the speech, the hour.
Onitsha Main Market, Ogbo Oye, and the river port did not become important because a minister said so. They became important because a people learned, on this bank, how to move inventory. A second crossing is not a monument. It is a wider pipe for that old instinct.
The first bridge remains in the photograph of the city’s memory. The second is in the ledger. Both are now facts of Ala Igbo.

Governor Alex Otti told investors in June 2026 that Aba and eight neighbouring councils now run on Geometric Power — about 188 megawatts, off the national grid.

The Igbo apprenticeship did not begin in a seminar. It is how Ariaria still turns a boy with no capital into a man with a line of shoes.

The stalls in these photographs are not a museum of trade. They are one of West Africa’s densest credit systems — still informal, still fast, still Igbo.
